Patience pays with Makatiti

Makatiti - Bruno Cannatelli
Trainer John Sadler has always known Makatiti (NZ) (Pins) had the makings of a Saturday class horse, it has merely been a case of being patient.

"He's always shown me good ability, it's the mental side of things that has held him up," Sadler said after Makatiti ($8) nosed out Divine Mr Artie ($5) in a driving finish under Craig Williams to win Saturday's Grand Hotel Frankston Handicap (1400m) at Caulfield.

"He's run several placings from 11 starts and some of those were by narrow margins. It has just been a case of waiting for him to work things out - he's got the ability, no doubt."

Sadler said he would aim Makatiti at a similar race before the end of the season.

"We'll try and win another one in town with him," Sadler said.

"It's an obvious thing to say but they're only three once so if we can find another race against his own age that will suit. Then he can have a nice break over the spring.

"He's been very slow coming, he's going to be a lot better next time in." -racenet.com.au
