Rosetown Joe opens a winter campaign on Sunday that can provide him with a long overdue return to winning form.
The Istidaad gelding, who hasn't won a race for two years, will be back in action in the Te Aroha Veterinary Services Steeplechase.
Part-owner and trainer Warren Lund has been satisfied with the rising 11-year-old's recent progress after a setback delayed his return.
"He was going along nicely before the soles of his feet got a bit sore," he said.
"He's good now and he's done a lot of work around our farm, he's gone over to Mrs Browne's place a few times and he's schooled at Cambridge."
Rosetown Joe enjoyed his best winter in 2013 when he finished runner-up in the Waikato Steeplechase before he beat Tom's Myth to claim top honours in the McGregor Grant Steeplechase before a leg injury at the end of that campaign side-lined him for nearly two years.
"He went in the flexor tendon and had a fair bit of time off, but it came right," Lund said.
Rosetown Joe struggled for form when he resumed last winter with a fifth placing at Hastings the best performance of his campaign.
"The only decent race he went was in the Hawke's Bay 'chase and we couldn't find anything wrong with him," Lund said.
He has made no plans for Rosetown Joe and will assess him after his Te Aroha outing.
"We'll take it race by race with him now, but he won't be going to Wellington - it gets too wet for him so we won't be going down there again." – NZ Racing Desk.
