Kay Gregory has no regrets about taking her thoroughbred interest to another level.

The former television presenter shares in the ownership of the impressive Chris Wood-trained debut winner Wooden Edge, her first venture into ownership.

"It was a fabulous win and a really nice start, very exciting," Gregory said.

"Chris and I went to school together and I know he's a really honest trainer and keeps his owners well informed."

Gregory, who hosted the Breakfast show with Paul Henry for two and a half years from 2005, has followed racing since the mid-1970s.

"When I was a teenager my best friend's father had the Sydney Cup winner Oopik so I spent a lot of time at the races," she said.

"I've waited a long time to get involved and I've finally got a small share and the other people in the syndicate are really lovely."

Wooden Edge is the first runner for his sire Hold No Fear, an unraced son of Woodborough, and also counts the former top jockey Garry Edge among his group of owners.

He was ridden by stable apprentice Viktoria Gatu and came from last, no mean feat over 1150 metres on the turning Te Awamutu track, to win with ease.

"Viktoria was great and she's done a lot of work on the horse," Gregory said.

Although Wooden Edge had won both of his trials prior to his first-up success, it hasn't all been plain sailing with the four-year-old who proved to be a tough customer during his early education. – NZ Racing Desk.
