Trina Riddell believes an overly cautious approach with Iffwedance will pay long-term dividends and honour the memory of a long-time friend and client.
The Awapuni trainer will be in no rush to get the talented son of Iffraaj back into full work following an injury.
"He's still out spelling and we won't be hurrying him at all," Riddell said. "After he won at Otaki in December I was getting him ready for a race at Tauherenikau and he hurt a tendon doing pace work.
"It's not a major and we'll get it re-scanned in a couple of weeks. He's looking really good and the vets have said he can do a bit of work during the winter, but I don't think I will be racing him until next autumn.
"He might go on the water walker for a while and then I'll turn him out again.
"A lot of horses with his type of injury never have a problem again as long as they are given enough time off.
"He's young so it won't be an issue, but he is a monster of a horse so we have to be careful."
Iffwedance has won four of his 26 starts for Goodwood Stud's William Fell, who raced the gelding with his late father Rex.
"I made a promise to Rex that we would win a cup so I have to look after the horse to do that," Riddell said.
"When he's older I think he will be ideal type to take to Brisbane and we did speak with Rex about that as well." – NZ Racing Desk.
