Trainer Daniel Meagher had pinned his hopes on only one runner on Sunday, but thought his good friend Mohd Yusof had denied him by the proverbial pimple right at the wire. One minute later, the Australian handler, who spent 11years at Kranji with his father John, practically growing up among the local Kranji fraternity, rushed to shake the hands of the veteran Singaporean trainer. The photo print showed both Meagher's Hee's Ego and Yusof's Let's Talk Now have finished on level pegging: It was a dead-heat. "I wasn't sure if my horse made it, but I'm so rapt I've shared the win with Yusof, a quiet man but who has been a good genuine friend of ours for so many years," said Meagher. "It was our only runner of the day and though it's only a Class 5 race, it was a good result. This horse had 22 starts and it's hard to bring them back to a fitness level to win a race. "The first start for us is always a question mark, but I've kept the horse happy and content and kept him as fresh as possible. "His trials were okay but his work was better. Danny (Beasley) gave him a great ride." Let's Talk Now with Brazilian jockey Antonio da Silva up looked to have the $35,000 Class 5 Division 1 race (1200m) all sewn up at the 200m mark, but Hee's Ego managed to weave his way to the line to share the spoils in the nick of time. As usual, Yusof would not comment much about the win, just saying, without some pun, "there isn't much to talk about", and teasing da Silva that his "long nose" should have held off the other horse, but was overall pleased to share the spoils with Meagher. "Dan is a good young trainer. I've known him since he was a kid working horses for his dad," said Yusof. "It's nice to share a win with him." Previously trained by Mark Walker, Hee's Ego, a four-year-old by Tale Of The Cat was a $100,000 purchase from the draft of Phoenix Park at the 2013 Select Sale, while Let's Talk Now is a six-year-old by Keeper and was at at his second win, from 38 starts for the Loyalty's Stable. |
