Cambridge trainer Ralph Manning has had a week to remember with a double at Awapuni on Saturday capping a week where he produced four individual winners.
Manning's winning roll started with Houghton at Te Teko on Wednesday which was closely followed by In a Minute at Wanganui on Thursday before Tranky Doo and experienced campaigner Pump Up The Volume doubled his tally on the weekend.
Manning was delighted with the week's achievements although he was quick to pay tribute to leading rider Lisa Allpress who rode both of his Awapuni winners.
"Lisa is a top rider and she had done plenty of homework on the track before I legged her aboard them both," he noted.
"She told me where the best strip of ground was and how she would like to ride them both and she was spot on with her judgement."
Allpress, who currently leads the race for the National Jockey's Premiership with a nine win margin over Matt Cameron, produced a similar display on both runners as she made her finishing run in the middle of the Awapuni home straight to power home in convincing fashion.
"They both seemed to handle the tricky conditions well although Pump Up The Volume is just an old warhorse who gives his best every time he goes around," said Manning.
"It's just a shame there's no money in these winter staying races now as he's going around and slogging his guts out for $30,000 which is a bit of a joke really.
"The other mare is another very honest galloper who always tries hard. She seems suited on any type of track as she won on a Good 3 at Waipa to kick this preparation off and she's also won three now on heavy tracks.
"She has a few more wins in her yet although we'll try and take her through the grades before we attempt something a bit better for her. I do think she is good enough to win a nice race but we would crucify her with weight if she ran in the money in a stakes race at this stage of her career."
Manning indicated that Pump Up The Volume would take his place in this Saturday's Kiwifruit Cup (2100m) at Tauranga as he attempts to improve on minor placings in each of the last three editions of the winter feature. – NZ Racing Desk
