Roydon Bergerson has enjoyed a good season with the younger members of his team with the prospect of further black type success to come.

The latest of the Awapuni trainer's two-year-old success stories is Sophia Magia, who made a winning debut at Trentham on Saturday.

"She had won a jump-out at Levin pretty well," Bergerson said. "She's just kept on improving and hopefully she'll handle better tracks as well."

Bred and raced by Dame Lowell Goddard, Sophia Magia has now been set for the Listed Ryder Stakes at Otaki on July 30.

Bergerson has also won juvenile races this term with Karavali, who is currently under offer after running fourth at her last appearance in the Gr.1 Manawatu Sires' Produce Stakes, and Heisenberg.

His only other two-year-old runner has been Fine Taylor, who was third at his only start.

Meanwhile, the Gr.1 New Zealand Oaks heroine Savaria has been back in the stable for a week.

She added the Manawatu Summer Cup to her record on Boxing Day and was subsequently sixth in the Gr.1 New Zealand Stakes at Ellerslie. She was spelled after her strong-finishing third in the Listed Hawke's Bay Gold Cup.

"We'll just see what the weather does – she's okay on a dead track, but not anything worse," Bergerson said. "Her main goal will probably be the Wellington Cup."

He also welcomed the promising Beefeater back into work on Monday.

The three-year-old was given a break after he won for the third time in his seven start career at Trentham in April. – NZ Racing Desk.
